After a long wait, summer is finally here, and with it, comes sun and heat. We spend months yearning for this beloved season, painting the perfect picture in our minds, and always forgetting about one tiny inconvenience: getting make-up to stick during a heat wave. Is looking flawless while enjoying the nice weather too much to ask? Of course not! Here are a few simple steps to achieve an enduring fresh summer look.
1. Prep your skin
The rising temperature is no excuse to skimp out on your moisturizer. In fact, it’s just the opposite! Since you are going from humid, tropical-like weather to freezing cold air conditioning, your epidermis tends to suffer, and dehydrated skin is never far away. Apply a light moisturizing lotion under your sunscreen (but you’re probably already doing that religiously, right?), and exfoliate with a delicate gommage once a week, followed by a soothing mask to repair any sun damage.
2. Natural make-up
When it comes to your complexion, keep things to a bare minimum, so your face doesn’t feel like it’s melting during the day. Opt for a lightweight liquid foundation (almost water-like), and a highlighting concealer for an automatic glow. Don’t forget to apply a translucent powder and a spritz of setting mist. When you have the option, choose products with UVA and UVB protection. But don’t forget to reapply throughout the day!
3. Go waterproof
Waterproof make-up is a stroke of genius, and you should use it! Whether you are trying to beat the heat, or splashing around at the beach, your look will remain intact. More than likely, your favourite mascara and lipstick come in waterproof format. If not, purchase products that will set your make-up. Say goodbye to streaks running down your face and hello to vibrant, long lasting wear!
4. Look tan…temporarily!
We all dream of beautiful sun-kissed skin with a healthy glow, but we also fear the harmful rays of the sun. So, what’s the solution? Bronzing powder—preferably matte—lends the most natural bronzed effect. Apply it sparingly with a large brush where the sun would naturally kiss your face: your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, your chin and forehead.
5. Have fun!
Summer is the time to play—if you dare. Step out of your comfort zone and reach for your colourful liquid liners and tinted lip balms. It’s the perfect time to have fun with different colour palettes and try interesting textures.
