How to Wear Yellow

Yellow, the colour of all things happy: sunshine, banana popsicles, cheese, and a slice of chilled lemon meringue pie on a hot summer day. This vibrant, cheerful hue can also be a fashion statement for all, but it is often overlooked, and seen as the colour reserved for darker skin tones. Which couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether you are a blonde, a brunette, or a redhead, you can absolutely wear yellow, the key is choosing the right shade, and knowing how to accessorize it.

Blondes

Looking good in yellow when you have blonde hair is all about matching your clothes to your hair. If you are a cool blonde (platinum, beige, or ash) look for yellow pieces that are also cool (pale yellow, pastel yellow, poppy yellow). Keep in mind that the same recommendations apply for grey and silver hair, since the undertones are the same as the ones in ash blond hair.

Reese Witherspoon nailed this pairing at the Golden Globes, with her light blonde hair and a pale yellow strapless gown. Dazzling accents complete the look: a choker-like diamond necklace and yellow diamond earrings from Tiffany & CO. Her make-up is light and fresh with a hint of coral undertones.

If you have warm blonde hair (honey, gold or champagne) look for yellow clothes that are also warm (golden yellow, mustard). Blake Lively is rocking the perfect shade to match her long honey locks. Her make-up and accessories are both understated, a pair of long dangle earrings, and a sun-kissed glow with a light pink lipstick.

Red Hair

If you are a redhead, the right shade of yellow can really make your hair colour pop. The best way to complement red pigments is with a mustard hue. Emma Stone hit this one out of the park with a gorgeous vintage-inspired style featuring an elegant crystal embellishment at the neckline. A bright coral lip ties everything together perfectly.

Brown or black hair

Any shade of yellow will look great on you. If you have brown hair and a lighter skin tone, opt for a pale, pastel yellow. If you have a darker complexion go for a vivid yellow like Viola Davis, walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes. Her minimalist approach to jewellery and make-up makes the dress the focal point of the outfit. Well done!
