Fall is officially upon us. While some of us run the risk of succumbing to post-summer blues, others are more inclined to embrace the shifting seasons and all the delightful treats this glorious time of year has to offer. From fall foliage to that extra hour of sleep we all crave, there’s plenty to celebrate, as the air becomes cool and crisp and a brilliant rainbow of colour gently covers the ground.
In the spirit of the season, we’ve decided to pay homage to fall by highlighting some of our favourite autumn-approved sites, styles, tastes and activities.
Fiery Hues
Fall ushers in an explosion of colours. Bursts of red, orange and yellow paint tree-lined streets, while crispy leaves crackle beneath our feet. We usually have until the end of October before barren limbs replace vibrant fall foliage, so take advantage of the autumnal beauty before icy temperatures begin to set in.
Fashion Finds
Fall is arguably the most exciting time of year for fashion. From tailored knits to dressy denim that hugs your figure in all the right places, the wardrobe possibilities are endless. Transitional layers alone can transform your style and provide an added level of sophistication to your look. If you haven’t mastered the art of layering just yet, experiment with capes, ponchos and cardigans with draping silhouettes.
Evocative Flavours
Tired of pumpkin spice? You’re not alone. Luckily, there’s a plethora of holiday flavours waiting to tickle your senses this season. From cranberries, pecans and squash, to cinnamon, cloves and ginger, satisfying any comfort food cravings you have may be easier than you think. So, clear out your fridge and pantry and make room for all your favourite autumnal ingredients. You’re only a recipe away from mouth-watering delicacies, such as butternut squash soup, pecan pie and sweet cinnamon bread.
An Apple a Day
Fall is the height of apple picking season. If you enjoy the outdoors and homegrown produce, throw on your coziest sweater and jeans and travel to the nearest orchard. Many local farms offer tractor rides, petting zoos and kid-friendly live music, so gather your whole family for a fun-filled day of activities. Once you return home with your handpicked selection of fruit, you’ll be well equipped to create homemade apple pie and other baked delights.
Fall Back
Although shorter days and less daylight can have a negative impact on your mood, there’s an undeniable upside – an extra hour of sleep as we turn our clocks back. If you look at the end of Daylight Savings Time as an opportunity to catch up on your rest, you may be able to avoid that week-long haze that often follows the time shift. Rather than going to bed an hour later on Saturday, November 2, or waking up an hour earlier on Sunday, November 3, take advantage of that bonus snooze time and sleep!
Whether you’re a critic or enthusiast when it comes to fall, take a moment (or two) to appreciate the splendors it has to offer. Before you know it, winter will be back with a vengeance and we’ll have to wait another year to experience all the familiar comforts of the season.
